Recycle Jacket into a purse

For the past couple of years the sewing industry has been recycling everything - we've been doing the jeans into purses for ages now. The new twist for the last few years is Men's Jackets.

The fashion industry is a knock-off world, we get an itch to do our own. It was so much easier than I thought. I've had this Jacket hanging on my to do pile for some time. (my To Do sewing stuff hangs on my walls).

I took the easy route I opened up the jacket and placed my pattern pieces right on it, pinned them and cut out the fabric and my lining pieces all at once. It went just as fast as cutting out regular fabric.

I incorporated a pocket into my back pocket piece:

Give it a try with any pattern that you have, it's so easy!

I added it to Made by you Monday - I hope there is no rule about adding older posts - If there is please tell me?

THAT is adorable! I am not even minimally crafty but I have utmost respect for the creations of those who are! I bet you could shop the thrift stores and create your whole Christmas list!

Thank you Beth, I haven't done a craft Christmas (one when I make all my gifts) in a long time. My Christmas list has grown since 4 of my siblings got married and started having children.

I might do some this year - thank you for the reminder.

I love it! I have a stash of men's suiting material that I love to make scarves and quilts out of. The purse is just one more thing to do.

Good Morning. I am arriving here from your comment on my site (nanapoppins.com). I only came to thank you for your kind words but now I find my self reading and reading. First in your profile I see you live in Indio, CA. When we moved to the left coast that is the first place we stopped in CA. Until now I haven’t heard of it again lol.

The jacket into the purse is a great idea! Looks amazing, you are definitely talented! Karmen brought me her shirt that needed mending. Being the Nana I said “sure I can sew!” long story short I managed to sew it to myself. Needless to say, I appreciate others talent!

You have a great weekend, thanks for stopping by my blog J

Jen I would love to see your scarves and quilts, Are they on your blog - can you provide a link?

Patty - of all the places on the west coast - you ended up in Indio - there's got to be a story behind that one, Because no one comes to Indio on purpose.

I love how you did this! Did you use a store bought pattern? If so could you let me know which one? My sewing skills don't extend to being able to design one! :(

Michelle It is a pattern that I designed. I will eventually finish writing and illustrating the sewing instructions and put the pattern on in my Etsy shop.

But using the jacket can work for any pattern. Most pattern companies have a pattern for a messenger bag. I did a search online and found this one http://www.simplicity.com/p-5266-mens-messenger-bags.aspx It's a bit wider than mine but it works.

This turned out great! I like it much better as a bag than a jacket. Thanks for sharing!
